HAPPY FOREVER
A
series of short films featuring a cast of bemused forest
creatures transplanted into absurd situations, this series
has slowly evolved from an initial fascination with the
uncanny visual and narrative similarities found between
‘furrie fetishist culture’ and The Muppet Show
into a more complicated work interested in exploring the
relationships that exist between human beings and the
companion species with which they share the world.
Throughout, Spy has (in line with her overall aesthetic)
vowed to use those peoples (friends, neighbors, random
folks on the street) and materials (long-johns, discarded
carpets, and thrift-store finds) within her closest reach
– rather than professional actors, soundstages, and
sets – to make Happy Forever come alive. Happy
Forever has thus been a project performed by a cast of
individuals brought together through their shared love of
malt liquor and independent film making, and its beauty is
located in its incongruous use of tube socks.
